In May, 2001, after serving as missionaries in the Philippines for over fifteen years, Gracia and her husband, Martin, were captured and held hostage in the jungle for a little over a year by terrorists. In the rescue attempt by US and Phillipine government troops, Martin Burnham was killed during the shooting between the kidnappers and the soldiers. Click here for a bio and video.
In her book, To Fly Again--Surviving the Tailspins of Life," she introduces herself by writing, ". . . I hope you don't think I'm preaching at you, or that I have it all together. I'll be the first to tell you that I don't. And my kids would second that . . . God knows all about the cross winds that batter our lives--yours and mine--tossing us, like a fragile aircraft, into a tailspin. He calmly guides our shaky hands on on the stick . . . We won't crash after all."
Gracia, and all you other widows out there, you Go girlfriend! Fly high!
. . . but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31
